We are excited to be able to announce dates for our online training sessions next year, all aimed at supporting those people on the Marshals Development Pathway. Please note that some run on Tuesdays and some on Wednesdays.

2024 Training Programme announced

We are very excited to announce our comprehensive programme of training for marshals and officials in 2024. It covers lots of modules on Motorsport UK’s Marshal Development Pathway as well as continuing with the popular series of informal presentations.

This training is organised and run by the Scottish Association of Motor Sports Clubs, as the Regional Association for Motorsport UK in Scotland. It is supported financially by grant funding from the British Motorsport Trust, and supported administratively and technically by the Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club.

We are exceptionally grateful for the ongoing support of everyone involved.

Are you interested in helping with the development of motorsport marshals and officials in Scotland?

The Scottish Association of Motor Sports Clubs is the Regional Association for Motorsport UK in Scotland. It is the largest Regional Association, covering over 30,000 square miles and bringing together Motor Clubs from across the whole of Scotland. Our Regional Training Team are involved in delivering a wide variety of training, both online and in person, across a wide range of disciplines, including race, rally, speed, recovery, medical, rescue, and many more.

Trainers

If you would be interested in supporting your fellow motorsport volunteers and would like to find out more about becoming a licenced trainer, we’d like to hear from you.

Motorsport UK Trainers are volunteers and are responsible for the delivery of approved training material at training events. Their expertise might also be called upon in the development of new training material on behalf of Motorsport UK.

All Motorsport UK Trainers are required to attend a two-day residential “Train the Trainer” course where they are required to demonstrate their instructional ability. In addition, guidance will be given on effective training methods and skills.

Trainers are also required to undergo suitability checks (DBS, PVG or AccessNI) as part of the licence process.

Admin Support

We’re also looking for someone with good admin skills and experience in Excel to support our Regional Training Coordinator.

As with all motorsport officials, this is a voluntary position. You don’t need to be a licenced trainer for this role, but if you are interested in progressing along that route, we will certainly support you.

Training Calendar

Full details of all our events can be found on our Training Calendar, which will be updated with any events or changes to the current plan - but we thought it would be useful to highlight some of the current events below.

Online Training Sessions

We are running a series of monthly online training seminars, live on Zoom. You can join in with a computer, tablet or smartphone. Each session usually lasts for around 90 minutes and you'll receive a certificate of attendance.

These are all Motorsport UK training modules and count towards grade maintenance or upgrade requirements for Motorsport UK licence holders.

Spectator Safety and Management - Tuesday 31 January, 7pm
Get a basic knowledge of the effective management of spectators on a rally event. This session is suitable for new marshals and anyone wanting a refresher, but it will be of particular benefit to those wanting to upgrade from Registered Marshal to Grade 1 Rally Marshal on the Marshals’ Pathway. This training will be supplemented with practical training in the Scottish Borders in April.

Fire Theory and First Marshal on Scene - Tuesday 28 February, 7pm
Get the knowledge and confidence to tackling a fire in a motorsport environment and be able to intervene until medical and rescue services arrive. This session is for new marshals and anyone wanting a refresher. All upgrades in the Marshals Pathway require the Fire Theory foundation modules. The First Marshal on Scene module is required for all discipline upgrades from Registered Marshal to Grade 1 on the Marshals’ Pathway. We also require the Fire Theory module to be completed before attending a practical fire training session. This training will be supplemented with practical training in the Scottish Borders in April.

Rally Radio - Tuesday 28 March, 7pm
Learn about the various communication methods at a Rally event and how to effectively communicate. This session will be of particular benefit to those wanting to upgrade from Grade 1 Rally Marshal to Grade 2 (Radio) Marshal on the Marshals’ Pathway. It will also be useful for anyone looking for a bit of a refresher. This training will be supplemented with practical training in the Scottish Borders in April.

Introduction to Speed Marshalling - Tuesday 25 April, 7pm
Motorsport has many disciplines, all with slightly different rules, regulations and things that marshals need to be aware of for the event to run safely. Sprints and hill climbs, or ‘Speed Events’ as we know them, involve competitors driving as fast as they like around tracks or up hills. In this session, you will get a basic awareness of your role as a Marshal at speed events, how to ensure your personal safety, and acquire a basic understanding of the organisational structure of a speed meeting. This session is suitable for new marshals and anyone wanting a refresher, but it will be of particular benefit to those wanting to upgrade from Registered Marshal to Grade 1 Speed Marshal on the Marshals’ Pathway.

Introduction to Race Marshalling - Tuesday 30 May, 7pm
Motorsport has many disciplines, all with slightly different rules, regulations and things that marshals need to be aware of for the event to run safely. Learn about the meaning of each flag used at race meetings and become more aware of the safety car flag and board process. This session is suitable for new marshals and anyone wanting a refresher, but it will be of particular benefit to those wanting to upgrade from Registered Marshal to Grade 1 Race Marshals on the Marshals’ Pathway.

Rally Event Organisation and Structure - Tuesday 25 July, 7pm
Learn about the Chain of Command system and the various levels of decision making which can be allocated within it, particularly within rally events. This session is suitable for experienced marshals and anyone wanting a refresher, but it will be of particular benefit to those wanting to upgrade from Grade 2 Rally Marshal (Radio or Timing) to Grade 3 Rally Marshal on the Marshals’ Pathway.

Rally Incident Response - Tuesday 29 August, 7pm
Get an understanding of the issues associated with motorsport incidents, with particular emphasis of those at rally events. This session will be of particular benefit to those wanting to upgrade from Grade 1 Rally Marshal to Grade 2 Rally Marshal (Radio or Timing) on the Marshals’ Pathway. It will also be useful for anyone looking for a bit of a refresher.

Introduction to Rally Timing - Tuesday 26 September, 7pm
Find out why timekeeping is important and learn about the key responsibilities of a Timing Marshal. This session will be of particular benefit to those wanting to upgrade from Grade 1 Rally Marshal to Grade 2 (Timing) Marshal on the Marshals’ Pathway. It will also be useful for anyone looking for a bit of a refresher.

Understanding Cross Country Events – Trials, Comps and Challenge Events - Tuesday 31 October, 7pm
Motorsport has many disciplines, all with slightly different rules, regulations and things that marshals need to be aware of for the event to run safely. Cross Country events are a wide and vibrant sub-culture that reflect many of the “normal” branches of motorsport... but with the twist of very challenging terrain. This online session looks at what marshals need to be aware of in this particular discipline. This session is suitable for those wanting to get involved as a motorsport marshal, and will also be useful for anyone looking for a bit of a refresher. This training will be supplemented with practical training in South West Scotland in November.

Report Writing - Tuesday 28 November, 7pm
Learn about what should be included in reports and get the confidence to deliver effective reports using words and diagrams. This session is suitable for all marshals, but it will be of particular benefit to those wanting to upgrade from Grade 2 Marshal to Grade 3 Marshal in all disciplines on the Marshals’ Pathway. It will also be useful for anyone looking for a bit of a refresher.

Face to Face Training

We are planning a number of in-person training events to include a wide range of practical topics. The dates for these sessions are aligned with significant events in the Scottish motorsport calendar.

Race Marshals Training - Saturday 18 February, Knockhill Racing Circuit. This training day, organised by the Scottish Motor Racing Club, is suitable for both new and experienced race marshals and will involve both classroom and practical workshops. For newcomers, it is an opportunity to get an induction into race marshalling with the Scottish Motor Racing Club, whilst more experienced marshals will have the opportunity to refresh their knowledge on a variety of subjects and/or learn about new topics. Attendance counts towards grade maintenance or upgrade requirements for Motorsport UK licence holders.

Rally Marshals Training - Saturday 8 April, Duns. Practical training to include Marshalling on Closed Road Rallies; First Marshal on Scene; Fire Theory; Rally Radio; Spectator Safety and Management.

Marshalling at Speed Events - May, north of Scotland. Exact date and venue to be confirmed. More information and registration information will be available nearer the time.

Rally Marshals Training - Friday 13 October, Mull. More information and registration information will be available nearer the time.

Marshals Training - Saturday 28 October, Edinburgh. More information and registration information will be available nearer the time.

Marshals Training - Friday 17 November, Dumfries and Galloway. More information and registration information will be available nearer the time.

Motorsport Emergency and Medical Services Training Weekend - Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 December, Knockhill Racing Circuit. This event brings together Doctors, Paramedics, Rescue Teams and Recovery Operators for two full days of intensive specialist training, and specialist CPD workstreams for registered health care professionals. There will be a mix of workshops, practical skill stations, and simulations throughout the weekend, with plenty of time for discussion, reflection and networking. More information and registration information will be available nearer the time.

Informal Development Sessions

This is a series of 6 bi-monthly online sessions on a range of less formal topics. They will run on Zoom and you can join in with a computer, tablet or smartphone. Each session usually lasts for around 90 minutes. They are not Motorsport UK modules and cannot be used for upgrade or grade maintenance purposes.

Marshals' Pathway, Upgrades and Assessments, and the Acquired Rights Process - Thursday 23 February, 7pm
Find out more about the new Marshals’ Pathway and how to work your way through it. We'll also explain the Acquired Rights process, which enables those who may not have previously registered with Motorsport UK, or have chosen not to upgrade, to have their knowledge, skills and experience recognised by a more suitable grade of registration.

A look behind the scenes at how the governing body is organised, who’s who, who does what, and a whole lot more.

Let's be social... and responsible! - Thursday 29 June, 7pm
This session considers the use and abuse of social media in motorsport.

There's an app for that! - Thursday 31 August, 7pm
There are a multitude of apps available for mobile devices which can be really useful in motorsport. From location to mapping to routes, from first aid to finance, from training to safety plans… let’s have a look at what’s available.

In conversation with... the people behind the scenes - Thursday 26 October, 7pm
Learn about the various categories and championships, and rounds of events - and what happens in the background for months before the first car is on the line. Find out more about the role of Secretaries of the Meeting, Stewards, Clerks of the Course and other senior officials. You can also find out how you can get involved if you're interested.

Round up of the Training Year - Thursday 28 December, 7pm
A fun and festive end to the SAMSC online training seminar series for motorsport marshals and officials.

Medical, Rescue and Recovery Seminars

This is a series of 6 bi-monthly webinars aimed specifically at Medical, Rescue and Recovery personnel involved in a first response role at incidents. Attendance at these sessions is restricted to Motorsport UK licenced Medical, Rescue and Recovery personnel (full and trainee) so that we can focus more on the medical and operational issues than we perhaps could in a more open session. Motorsport UK licence numbers will be verified before registration is confirmed.

Incident Review – Silverstone - Thursday 2 February, 7pm
The session looks at a significant incident in 2020 and the lessons learned.

Incident Review – Thruxton - Thursday 6 April, 7pm
The session looks at a significant incident in 2022 and the lessons learned.

Responding to EV incidents - Thursday 1 June, 7pm
The session looks at how rescue, medical and recovery teams should prepare for, and respond to, incidents involving electric or hybrid vehicles.

Roles and Responsibilities - Thursday 3 August, 7pm
In this session, we’ll be discussing the different roles and responsibilities of medical, rescue and recovery personnel, and how we work individually, and as a specific team, and as part of the wider team involved in an incident.

Managing and controlling a scene - Thursday 5 October, 7pm
Building on the August webinar, we’ll look at what activities take place at an incident scene and how these can be developed to maximise the effectiveness of the command and control of the incident.

Building personal resilience - Thursday 7 December, 7pm
Responding to an incident can have a lasting effect on the way we process the world around us. Being a resilient responder starts with a commitment to taking care of yourself.

Online Training Sessions

These are Motorsport UK modules and count toward grade maintenance or upgrade requirements for Motorsport UK licence holders.

Last year, we ran 12 online seminars for marshals and officials with a total attendance of 1273. On average, 68% of delegates rated the sessions as excellent and a further 30% rated them as good.

Introduction to Rally and Cross Country Marshalling - 25 January, 7pm
This online session is aimed at those wanting to get involved as a motorsport marshal, and will also be useful for anyone looking for a bit of a refresher.

First Marshal on Scene and Fire Theory - 22 February, 7pm
What you do in the few minutes immediately after an incident - where control is being informed, the race or rally is being slowed/stopped, and safety services are being mobilised - can mean the difference between life and death. This session is about the immediate interventions that you can usefully and safely do until more help arrives. It will be supplemented with practical first aid and firefighting training later in the year.

Introduction to Radio - 29 March, 7pm
The successful running of various motorsport events relies on safe and efficient communications. This session looks at the chain of communications on a rally, focusing particularly on the Stage Operators - Start Radio, In Stage Radios and the Finish Radio. It will be supplemented with practical training later in the year.

Introduction to Timing - 26 April, 7pm
Timing is fundamental to most motorsport events for the determination of winners and provides information for competitors, spectators, and the media alike. Very few events do not have some element of timing within them. This session looks at the basics of timing and why the role is required. It will be supplemented with practical training later in the year.

Dealing with Incidents - 24 May , 7pm
This online session is primarily aimed at helping you to understand your role, and the roles of others, in the event of a motorsport incident. It will be supplemented with practical training later in the year.

Stage Setup and Chain of Command - 28 June , 7pm
Learn more about stage setup plans as well as signage, taping etc. This online session will be of use even if you're not involved in the actual setup of a rally stage.

Advanced Radio, 26 July, 7pm
The successful running of various motorsport events relies on safe and efficient communications. This session goes into more detail on the role of Radio Coordinators and Radio Controllers. It also touches on some of the technological aspects of radio operation. This session will be supplemented with practical training later in the year.

Advanced Timing - 30 August, 7pm
Timing is fundamental to most motorsport events and this session looks at some of the complexities in the process as well as pre-event preparation and backup systems. This online session will be supplemented with practical training later in the year.

Marshalling at Speed Events - 27 September, 7pm
Motorsport has many discplines, all with slightly different rules, regulations and things that marshals need to be aware of for the event to run safely. Sprints and hill climbs, or ‘Speed Events’ as we know them, involve competitors driving as fast as they like around tracks or up hills. Marshalling on Navigational Rallies - 29 November, 7pm
Motorsport has many disciplines, all with slightly different rules, regulations and things that marshals need to be aware of for the event to run safely. A navigational rally is a precision driving and navigating event - NOT a race. The objective is to always be in the right place at the right time. This online session looks at what marshals need to be aware of in this particular discipline.

Face to Face Training

We are planning a small number of face to face training events to include practical topics such as fire training, stage setup and practical timekeeping. The dates for these sessions are aligned with significant events in the Scottish motorsport calendar but are subject to change given the fluid situation with COVID-19.

April, Scottish Borders - Practical training to include Closed Road Rally Marshalling, Rally Radio, and Firefighting.

May, north of Scotland - Practical training to include Marshalling at Speed Events and Firefighting.

September, south of Scotland - Practical training to include Firefighting and First Aid.

October, Mull - Rally Marshals Training.

Informal Development Sessions

We are running these in response to feedback from last years training, where a significant percentage of participants requested topics that augment the modular marshals training programme.

How events are structured - 20 January, 7pm
Learn about the various categories and championships, and rounds of events - and what happens in the background for months before the first car is on the line.

Location services, map reading and navigation - 24 March, 7pm
We'll look at a range of online services and apps as well as some basic map reading tools that will give you the freedom to explore new terrain without being totally reliant on technology.

Progressing and specialising as a motorsport marshal, 19 May, 7pm
Marshals perform a wide range of essential duties to help events run safely and effectively and there are many ways to get involved behind the scenes. We will focus on how to progress through the development pathways for both new and existing marshals, the upgrade requirements for specific disciplines, and an overview of how to get involved in more specialist roles.

Discover more about what the motorsport Rescue, Medical and Recovery teams actually do, what makes them tick... and what makes them twitch! You can also find out how you can get involved if you're interested.

In conversation with... the Senior Officials - 22 September, 7pm
Find out more about the role of Stewards, Clerks of the Course and other senior officials. You can also find out how you can get involved if you're interested.

In conversation with... the Scrutineers - 24 November, 7pm
The Scrutineer is there to help the competitor to compete in a safe and legal manner and comply with Motorsport UK Regulations. They are often among the first to arrive and the last to leave an event. Find out more about this essential role and find out how you can get involved if you're interested.

Medical, Rescue and Recovery CPD Seminars

This is a series of 6 bi-monthly webinars aimed specifically at Medical, Rescue and Recovery personnel involved in a first response role at incidents. They will run on Zoom and you can join in with a computer, tablet or smartphone. Each session usually lasts for around 90 minutes and you'll receive a certificate as evidence of attendance. Attendance is restricted so that we can focus more on the medical and operational issues than we perhaps could in a more open session. Motorsport UK licence numbers will be verified before your registration is confirmed.

Last year, we ran 4 seminars, with a total attendance of 833. On average, 74% of delegates rated these sessions as excellent and a further 22% rated them as good.

Scottish Motorsport Safety Services Training Weekend, 11-12 December 2021

The Scottish Association of Motor Sports Clubs is delighted to invite you to our annual Scottish Motorsport Safety Services Training Weekend - hosted by Knockhill Racing Circuit and with the support of Castle (Motorsport) Safety Service, the Scottish Hill Rally Club, Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club and the British Motorsport Trust.

Dates: Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December 2021

Location: Knockhill Racing Circuit, by Dunfermline, Fife, KY12 9TF (///nylon.giants.peach)

This event brings together Doctors, Paramedics, Rescue Teams and Recovery Operators for two full days of intensive specialist training. There will be a mix of workshops, practical skill stations, and simulations throughout the weekend.

Review of the Marshals' Pathway

Motorsport UK is continuing its review of the Marshals' Pathway, in conjunction with the Marshals' Advisory Group, and have recently completed a period of consultation with key stakeholders from the marshalling community, including Clubs and Regional Associations. The feedback was most enlightening, and will inform the steps that will be taken over the next 12 months to ensure that the Grading Scheme is replaced with a system that is not only fit for purpose for many years to come, but has been created with input from the people within the community itself.

Upon renewal in August, all discipline-specific Trainee grades (Accredited Marshal in Rally and Cross Country) will be replaced with a "Registered Marshal" grade which allows them to attend all branches of the sport. This change will help to drive volunteer participation across all disciplines of the sport, leading to a bigger pool of Marshals for the organising clubs to call upon.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Digital Toolkit: Learn to Save a Life

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping blood around the body and vital organs, due to an abnormal heart rhythm. It can happen to anyone, at any time.

60,000 people have a sudden cardiac arrest within the community every year in the UK.
12 each week are under the age of 35.
Only 1 in 10 survive.

If effective action is taken within the first minute, it can treble chances of survival.

UK Coaching have created a digital toolkit, which includes an interactive eLearning course, in collaboration with Resuscitation Council UK, St John Ambulance and Joe Humphries Memorial Trust, and funded by Sport England. The Toolkit is free and will help you gain the knowledge and confidence to respond quickly and appropriately in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest.

It includes:

practical information and advice
an immersive scenario-based eLearning course
a series of high impact and informative videos
insightful interviews and compelling written features with survivors, their coaches, and victims’ families
signposting to further support.

Rescue, Recovery and Medical Training Seminar, 5th December 2020

You may know that the Scottish Association of Motor Sports Clubs' Training Team normally run a training weekend in December every year for Rescue and Recovery marshals and medics. It won't be a major surprise that it will not be taking place in its usual format but that certainly doesn’t mean no training... we have organised a series of online training seminars on Saturday 5th December. And because it’s online, we have the opportunity to widen the range of speakers 😃

We'll be joined by some great guest speakers from around the world, and there are also a number of online learning modules on a variety of subjects that you can do during the weekend.

This training is primarily aimed at Rescue and Recovery crews and medics - but if you're interested in learning more about these specialist roles, please do register and join us.
